What kind of oil?

What kind of engine oil do I use in my 5000 diesel tractor? I know this sounds simple, but I sure don"t want to screw it up. Do I need to use an oil that says its for diesel engines, or just regular engine oil?

ANY type of 15w40 made today will be superior to the oil that was available in 1965 when that series came out.

i use 15w40 C/S rated oil in just about all my stuff.

mobile-delvac, shell-rotella, chevron-delo 15w-40 available at wally world, autoparts and all truck stops.

5w-40 if you doing snow plowing.

mystic and purplepower also makes a great diesel oil.

I prefer the chevron if its available but use all of the above. All meet the current diesel api standards.

With an old engine like that what you want to do is make sure what ever oil you use is high in Zinc. It must be a diesel engine oil and not car oil because most all diesel oil is high in zinc were as car oil is low to none in zinc. All the oil everyone has recommended is good oil and will do the job but they do make oil for older vehicles that is very high in zinc but you'll pay a premium for it. When ever I rebuild a motor (Automobile) I use Shell 15w40 for diesels for the break in period and first start up.
