310 (1977-1981) & 315 (1976-1982) are nearly the same vintage; 315 is medium capacity, 310 is low capacity baler.

So for what I'm wanting to do, with a baler, they will be a good enough baler?

What can you tell me, about a NH 278? There is one, at this sale, I'm attending.

We had a 276 before we bought our 565... I'd guess the 278 is in th esame time frame as the 276 - 1970's - but a higher capacity machine. Quick way to tell is if it holds more than 4 balls of twine, it's a high capacity machine.

Brucehopf,
I had a NH310 bought new in 1979. Ran it until 2003. Very reliable! Most I did was 6300 hay and 1800 straw in one year. At the last used very little as I converted to round bales.
That said it all depends on how it was cared for. look for wear on the knotters and any place that rotated. You can tell a lot just looking at the wear on the drawbar!
One problem that was hard to find yet easy to fix once I figured it out was the adjustment for the plunger lock out. It would randomly snap a shear pin for no reason it seamed. Got that adjusted and all was great.
Also check the slip clutch. I had to rebuild that as there was some wear there. Of course I was running it with a 7000, so I was using a lot of HP on it.
With the 7000 I was able to pull a wagon behind it on my hilly ground.
Keith

I've never had a 315, but have (or had) a 310, 311, and 570 (newer version of the 315). The 310 has a poorer sliding carriage plunger feeding system than the others that will cause issues eventually. The 310 is still a great baler that will give good service, but if given the choice go for a 311 or 315/316.
