replacing starter pushbutton on 650

I"ve got a new starter pushbutton that I need to install. I put shifter in neutral, took all cover bolts out of shifter plate cover & tried to lift plate up & off but it will only come up an inch or so. Somthings hanging. ? Any ideas. There is no silicone under the cover. It feels like shifter linkage is connected somehow. Will it come off if I put in a certain gear ? With it in neutral, I pushed down & came up with force trying to dislodge to no avail. I also took nut off shifter & tried to wiggle shifter loose but its painted stuck I think. ??? Thanks for any suggestions. David B

that shifter's gotta come off first. and they are usually a pain.

look at the exploded diagram for a list of parts you will want to find when it comes apart.

Sorry, I missed the "5" in 650. Have been working on a 4 speed
