Hi,

I am new to all of this so i guess some one will tell me if i have done it all wrong.
I have a Ford 5000 tractor, don't know the year as all id seems to be gone. The problem i have is the PTO keeps turning when not under load, i can stop it with a piece of wood up against it but it is not convenient when trying to dig post holes & is turning while trying to line them up. Is there an internal adjustment as all i seem to have is a engaging lever on the left side under the seat.

What does Poll a question & Poll option mean,

Brake band is broken. That happens when you try to stop a piece of PTO driven equipment spinning with a band only 1/2 in wide. Pull the full stop and let it quit turning and then take the PTO out of gear. The lift cover has to be pulled to replace the band.

Hi alwen, welcome to the forums!
I'm not familiar with the 5000, so I'll leave that to the other guys to answer.
It may (or may not) help them to know which transmission it has.
Some tractors had an internal PTO brake, others did not.
The poll a question options are to post a question and tally how many people
select which answer. One example I remember seeing was someone took a
poll on how many people normally got on and off their tractors on the right
side, left side, front or rear.

The 5000 has Independent PTO. The early (1965-1968) 5000's did not have a PTO Brake Band. They had this tiny little PTO Brake Pad and when it is worn the PTO spins constantly but without any "power". I have heard that an early 5000 can be converted to the brake band but I haven't done it.
PTO Brake Pad

Odds are you have an early unit with the brake pad. It was marginal at best when everything was working the way it was supposed to be.

In my experience, the biggest reason those early PTO units did not stop was because of warped clutch plates. In other words, you can put in as many new brake pads as you want, but it will still rotate until you replace the warped clutch plates.

If the clutch plates are indeed warped, then you need to be figuring out why they warped. This is usually because of a low pressure issue somewhere.
