3500 SOS Problem

Can't find my earlier thread on this issue so we'll start over...

I've got a 65 3500 w/ loader and backhoe. It sat for better than 10 years due to getting water in the bores after a partial head job and I bought it as a project tractor from a man who had bought it broke and never actually seen it running. Did a full rebuild and it runs well but now I'm having trans problems in some gears.

Specifically, it does not not move properly in R2 and several of the fwd gears. I was advised on this board to do a pressure test and band adjustment as a first step and have finally completed that. The hydraulic pressures on all 3 servo circuits were within spec and bands 2 & 3 adjusted properly but band was did not.

When you tighten the band 1 adjusting screw it never gets tighten even screwing it in flush with the trans case surface. There is no resistance to tightening either. I surmise that either the band is broken or some sort of a connecting link is not in there correctly.

Anyone seen this before? Is it possible to get to the band / supports through the top of the case or would I have to pull and tear down the trans?

Would it cause any damage to use the trans with band 1 not working? I can't see how it would but want to make sure. I don't hear any rattling or abnormal noises that make me think it's rubbing or in a position to cause damage in there.

Thanks,
~John

I doubt you will hurt anything by running it, but there are no guarantees.

Given what you've stated, my guess is that a band 1 strut has dropped or the band is broken. It should require a rear split to fix this.

If this is the scenario, you likely will have limited or no function in R2,3,4,7,8 &10.

That's what I was afraid of....

Is the band available? It doesn't seem to show up in the New Holland online parts database.

The tractor creeps in those gears but has no power - exactly like you'd expect from a brake band not working. The other gears work well though.

How expensive are the parts typically to do a rebuild on one of these? (assuming wear parts only, ie clutches and bands, no hard parts) Is it feasible for a home shop or a dealer only type job?

Thanks!

I can tell you that anything you do to a Ford or NH is more expensive than it ought to be.

As far as parts availability and pricing, I could look that up for you, but you can do it as well.

One with an aptitude for mechanics, an attention to detail, the proper service manuals and tools can do this job. It is not, however, for the faint hearted nor the fly by night.

The number 1 band is part number C0NN7A162A. partspring.com shows 2 available for a price of $484.79 a piece, I would call them first just to make sure that they actually have them before ordering one on-line.

If it were me, I would take it apart first to see what the actual problem is before I started throwing money at parts though.

As Larry said, it may just be that someone loosened up the adjuster too much at some point in the past and the retainer just fell down into the sump.

John, if it should come to that, I have two SOS
transmissions. Both in good working order. They are for the
2000 or 3000 model,s I am located in SW Utah few hours
North of Vegas. 435-439-5261 for details.

Sean,

Thanks! I must have overlooked it when I was on the new holland site last night.

Hopefully it's just a missing retainer. Maybe I'll see if I can get the borescope down in there and see what's going on.

The biggest thing is the pia factor in splitting it (again). I just got done doing a forward split to do the motor. At least this would be a bit easier since it runs and I can get the loader and hoe off first. The engine I had to do with it assembled on the trailer.

Probably it's just going to stay the way it is for a while since it does run and work, just don't have all the gear anymore.

Does anyone have any pictures of how the band and retainer fit together and into the case?

On a slightly different tangent, does anyone know a good source for a new s-o-s shifter? Mine is funky and missing a bunch of parts.

Thanks!

The ONLY potential source for new S-O-S shifter parts (aside from selector caps and (maybe) handles) is CNH.

Some are still available, All are expensive.

The only other alternative is used.
