960 clutch

My son has a 55 960 with the 5 speed trany and the two stage clutch that just went out. I remember someone on this site saying that this clutch was expensive to replace. Can anyone tell me about how many $'s a new clutch is and how much experience one needs to tackle the job? I'm also wondering how do you stabilize the narrow front end while splitting the tractor?

The clutch itself is a little more then $400 on this site. I would suggest getting the service manual. It walks you through the split and the clutch change itself. I'm about to do the same job on my 860 when the weather warms up a little. Can't help with the narrow front stabilization. Good luck

First step is to get a proper manual. The factory manual explains the splitting process in detail; I'm not so sure about the IT manual.

The row crop is not that difficult to split. Gather up a bunch of 4x4s with which to build cribbing. You need to support the front end in three places: cribbing behind the front wheel to keep the front from tipping over, stands under the back ends of the frame, and a jack under the back of the engine. Once the bolts that hold the tractor halves together are removed, there's nothing to support the back of the engine, which is why it must be supported separately.
 

You can save a lot of money if you want to take the time to rebuild the clutch. I am pretty sure that the procedure is in the IT manual.
 
The shop manual indicates you need the Ford #NDA-7502 Adjusting Fixture if you are going to service the clutch itself. I've read that it's pretty mandatory to have this tool.
