HELP with injector pump

I just bought a 65 ford 5000. After reading on here I learned that it had a button on the side of the Simms injector pump for staring it cold. After pulling the throttle half way back I tryed to push it in but it wouldn't budge. I took the handle of a screwdriver and finally got it pushed in but when I started it, it didn't pop back out. It seems to be running fine what little I've run it. I thought that it was supposed to throttle wide open until you push the throttle back to idle. I tryed to pull it back out but again it wouldn't budge. Has anybody ran into this problem, if so how do you fix it and will it hurt to just run it that way.
Thanks in advance for any help.

And when was the inj pump oil last changed or checked? Plug on side by throtle is level drains on bottom fills on top hex plug. Doesnt hurt to overfill. Use engine oil.

changed it when I bought the tractor about 3 weeks ago. the oil that was in was good and clean but I changed anyway because I didn't know the last time it was changed.

Try to free the excsess fuel/start retard rod by removing the rubber boot first if still on. Pull stop lever to shutoff position. This gets the balking spring on the rack out of the way inside. Now use penetrating oil on the rod inside hollow stop shaft and see if you can free it up, should pop back out when free. Spring that pushes it back is in the capnut on back side of pump, takes a 1/2 inch wrench to remove, may need to pull the spring out and clean rust out of cap with a drill bit. Cap supports the rod also and must be clean.

OK. Thanks dieseltech. I'll give that a shot and see if I have any luck.

take the cover off and clean everything up, also a good time make sure the rack moves free too. I don't recommend pulling the button out, it'll bind or break.
