another SOS probem

Bought a 971 diesel a while back with the famous SOS trans. It had been sitting for quite some time. Got the engine going and checked the oil level and cleanliness of the oil in the trans before engaging the disconnect. To my surprise it went right in gear. 1-8 worked excellent 9 and 10 seemed to lock up the tractor. Used it like that for a while today got on it was in 7th gear driving down the road when it completely quit pulling and coasted to a stop. Now in R1, R2 9, 10 it lugs engine slighly but wont move. all other gears act as neutral any ideas?

I'd want to make sure the band adjustment is proper before I went anywhere else.
