Re: 2000 rear axle bearing removal

We got the retainer and bearing off after finding out someone had welded the retainer on. And when we inspected the damage, we found a lot of deep gouges and grinder marks. So now it's off to the machine shop to get axles filled and turned. Whew! It's gotta get better don't it? LOL

If the bearing was tight I don't think I'd bother worrying about filling the gouges in. A few marks don't matter too much. Thing is... those shafts are case hardened. If you weld on them you'll affect the hardening and you're probably going to compromise the shaft more by repairing it than leaving it alone. Kind of a judgement call there... but if it's real bad I'd replace it.
