Ford 601 Not Starting Update

Hello All,

Here is an update on my Ford 601 Not Starting. Everything is Shinny New ...hooked up and tight. Hit the button and she now turns over. (6 Volt System)

I replaced All the cables except one. The one I did keep was a nice thick old copper cable...on that one I just replaced the battery connector.

I'll say the worse cable I had was the one from the new solenoid to the starter. Got a new one at Napa.

I also sanded and wire brushed all connecting points. She now turns over.

Next I need to replace my gas bowl gasket. Should I just buy a new gasket or make my own out of gasket material?

I don't know how tough it is to get a good seal with a homemade one. The original one is in pieces.

Any advice on how make a good gasket?

Congrats on your repairs to date. I did some of these same things on my 6 volt tractor recently and it now starts up just like my 12 volt ones do. Very cool, indeed, when everything is just right.

As for your gasket: Try some sheet cork. Trace the glass bowl and then cut out a ring a little larger. You should be able to find good gasket making material in any auto parts store or a hobby store.

Yes, changing those cables made that big a difference. I could not believe it. The engine turned as good as any 12 Volt.

I also made sure I had a fully charged battery ready to go.

As far as the gas bowl I did try some of that cardboard type gasket material I had laying around but It just didn't make a tight seal and started dripping.

So its off to get some sheet cork.

i frequently make a new gasket for fuel bowls,, unless it's the kind that has an integral screen.

just use the glass bowl to template it. dit it in oil wipe lightly, then pres tot he gasket paper.. it should leave a ghost impression so you can judge ID and OD.

cut with a razor knife. I use a medium thin gasket paper for mine...

I did try the gasket paper but I could not get it to seal tight. It started dripping. The gasket that was on the bowl was a black plastic ring. It has a screen but it did not seem to be attached to the gasket.

Although the gasket was very broken up. The screen has the little square hole in it. When I took the bowl apart the black ring just fell in pieces but the screen stayed in. Took the screen out cleaned it put it back then added my gasket paper. The bowl filled but then started dripping.

I figure I will give the cork a try. If that does not work I will have to order the plastic/rubber one. Mine was so bad I could not tell you what it was made of.

maybe the screen is why it leaks.. it needs to be embedding in the gasket or smaller than the gasket.

Hello All,

I got some sealing material today. Got it at napa part #3060 assortment pack .....comes with 4 pieces of material. Cork sheet 1/8" Cork Sheet 1/16" Rubber Cellulose 3/64" and Rubber Fiber Sheet 1/32. That's the thickness ....the sheets are about 10" squares.

Anyone know about what thickness a gas bowl seal is?
