Boy is Ford proud of their clutches

After tearing into the clutch I thought I'd price a new one. WOW! over $500 and no kiss, so I checked around and found a reman one for less than $300, guess I'm buying a reman one and new input shaft seals. With $300+ in clutch, diesel fuel line at $11 ft, I can't wait to see what the brakes are going to cost. What a expensive hobby!

(quoted from post at 20:32:59 02/26/13) NH is over the top on almost everything they sell. It's a wonder they're still in business.

The green and the red guys are complaining that it is the same for them.

Do a side-by-side comparison sometime of like-for-like parts, green vs blue, and you'll see what I mean. I've bought enough parts from Deere in my life to know that NH is way out of line on a LOT of their stuff.

Fix It Again Tony!
I hear ya, ain't nothing cheap about tractors as a hobby.
Then again, people do what they love as a hobby, right? :)

You are 100% right Bern. I work on more blue fords than anything else and some of their parts are totally crazy, like 12.00 for an
O-ring or 26.oo for a nut but Massey Ferguson is just as bad. I bought 5 little springs, last week to go in a steering sector. The weren't much bigger than those found in an ink pen. $15.07 EACH or 75.35 and 3 little snap rings at 21.72.No wonder customers complain.

That was a cheap one.... A lot are 6-700 and more if there's no aftermarket source.
For my own part I usually use NH discs in any of my own stuff. For lighter use or backyard type stuff I often use a Hy-Cap reman. I just find the Luk discs NH supplies are a bit better over the long haul.

As far as prices compared to Deere... I find NH is much the same. Some things are reasonable. Some things are outrageous... and a lot of stuff is just plain expensive.

these are not prices; they are behaviour modification techniques; customer asks for price on .79 cent spring and gets told 21.39; you"re SUPPOSED to find a salesman and buy a new tractor.......by being stubborn, you continue to drive up the price of parts....New Holland has figured out every 8n that"s still working cost them about 250,000 dollars a year, and they have to make it up somewhere......

Of course another way of looking at it is... that 79 cent spring probably came in a box with 24 others to the warehouse by freight that probably cost about $1 each, was handled by a parts clerk that's making 40K plus per year driving around on a lift that cost 40K to purchase, using a parts system that probably cost 10 million to have developed in a warehouse that cost 40 million to setup. On top of that you have people who must input data into said parts system to keep part information up to date so that you actually get the CORRECT 79 cent spring for your 65 year old tractor from whatever supplier they happen to be using at this point in time. Then said 40K parts clerk goes on 40K parts buggy and retreives and packages your 79 cent spring into a 2 dollar box with another 2 dollars worth of stuffing and sends it out to a dealer for another 15 bucks freight where the dealer then marks it up enough to try and make some money on it...
or, for those that know so much about springs... they can go to the hardware store and buy what they need... and for those that don't know about springs... well... they come on here and complain about how much NH charges for their knowledge of parts on 60 year old tractors.

Deere parts go through the same process. Still doesn't explain why NH can charge $75 for a seal that Deere would sell for $20. I see this over, and over, and over again on multiple types of like-for-like parts.

As an example, both Deere and NH (Ford) used to use ZF front drive axles. I used to buy parts for drive axles for a Ford tractor, FROM Deere, over the counter, for less than dealer cost at a NH dealership. Didn't matter whether it was tie rod ends or u-joints, the result was always the same.

That may be....

but the stuff I buy on a regular basis... I don't see a lot of difference. Every once and a while I get something from one or the other... and get pleasantly surprised... but not too often.
What I do fairly often see... is that any part that NH has a stranglehold on... that has no aftermarket source... then they really nail you. I find the same with Deere tho.

Do you have a clutch rebuilder anywhere in your area????

I was much more happy to go that route here in the Indy area.He gave me a little more spring pressure in my pressure plate and did a good job with it. :)
