Checking the Hydraulic Fluid Level on an 861 D

I've been having problems lately that the 3 point won't lift. Add hydraulic oil but the tractor did not have a dip-stick.

The last time I checked recently I added UTF oil because it looked low filled it to a level folks 'thought' was good. The lift worked great. Now today almost the same problem.

I'm not sure if I'm putting in enough 'hard to tell' 'without a dip stick'. Thought there would be a leak. Slight drip on the bottom of the tractor after it ran. Wiped it off and let it sit 'no leak detected'. My thinking here if there was a big leak it there would be big puddle of hydraulic oil on the ground. None detected on the ground or the bottom of the tractor.

Simply maybe I'm not putting enough in.. My question is how can you tell the right amount without a dip stick?

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

An 861 is supposed to have a dipstick for the rear differential/hydraulic reservoir by the PTO shift lever. The filler cap is on top of the rear differential center housing behind the seat.

You cannot but overfilling the hydraulic sump a reasonable amount will have no adverse effect.

It is a routine occurrence for the hydrayulic sump to be overfilled when the tractor is equipped with fully retracted external cylinders.

Incorrect! The dipstick is for the hydraulic reservoir only! The filler plug is under the seat. The differential/rear axle is an entirely different reservoir and has a level plug on the left trumpet.

Marc - you can buy a new dipstick from NH. My guess though, is that you're losing prime in your pump. Remove the front plug on the top of the pump and look in. If it is not full, crank (don't start) the tractor until it is full. Replace the plug and it'll work fine until the next time it loses prime. If this is your problem, and if it persists, a pump overhaul is in order.

you can safely put up to 3g of oil in that hyd sump.. I have laoders using that much to keep it from sucking dry with SA lift cyls extended.

I like about 2g in general.

if it's loosing prime as stated.. remov ethe plug from the pump and put in a pip threaded brass petcock... it's a redneck bandaid.. but works. can loosen to bleed each day... till you get it fixed correctly.

Might check your transmission level if your fluid is disappearing from the hydraulic sump. Might be pressure tube or bad PTO support seal. I'm certainly no expert but I have the same situation. I have purchased parts to correct but have another project going right now. I just drain excess off transmission and put it back in the hydraulic sump. I can run the tractor for a couple hours with no problem before lift starts acting up due to lower fluid level.
