Ford 801 powermaster

I have an 801 ford powermaster and I"m having trouble with the fuel pump and governor. I went to start up the 801 today and she turned over but then would slowly die down. I sprayed some starting fluid in the air filter housing and it would use it and then slowly die down again... It is also blowing more smoke than it should and my guess is fuel is leaking through the pump into the crankcase, causing it to smoke badly. The governor is messed up, not sure what"s wrong with it but every time I use the tractor, the first 30 minutes or so it will randomly rev up. Not sure what is causing this in the governor? Any help with my problems is greatly appreciated. - Joel

You have a RoosaMaster (now Stanadyne) injector pump. They are famous for allowing fuel to leak past seals on the driveshaft into the crankcase. They are also famous for the return line under the rocker arm cover to crack and allow fuel to drain into the oil. They have a plastic governor ring inside the pump that is famous for crumbling into pieces and the engine RPM becomes uncontrollable.
All of these are easy fixes. Replace the seals and confirm that the return line is not cracked. There is a kit that eliminates the plastic governor ring but you have to disassemble the pump to install the kit.
Maybe it's time to take the pump and injectors to a diesel shop.

Better get the pump fixed soon before the pins shear inside, will lock up the head and break the drive shaft. Not much left to repair if that happens, head and shaft are not cheep.
