Hello All,

I have a Ford 641 that won't start. I put a new battery in but all I get is a clicking sound from the solenoid when I push the starter button. So I replaced the solenoid and now I get better clicking sound but its still not turning the starter to start the engine.

Is there a way I can by pass the solenoid just to see if the starter will turn? Or maybe someone has had a similar problem that could help.

Thanks
Ralph

Hello All,

Here is an update on my Ford 641. Everything Shinny and New ...hooked up and tight. Hit the button and she now turns over.

Next I need to replace my gas bowl gasket. Should i just buy a new gasket or make my own out of gasket material?

Thank for the help,
Ralph

have you cleaned up the chassis ground location?

have you pulled the starter to see if it's got bad brushes or bearings / bushings?

I've not pulled the starter yet. I am going to recheck all connections and clean up anything that looks like it could be causing the problem as far as grounding.

If that does not work then its off with the starter.

a final check before pulling starter is a jumper cable from battery to starter quick check.

be in neutral and clutch blocked..

yes someone suggested taking a jumper cable from the solenoid pole to the starter.

Speaking of the solendoind i did notice that there was a lot of gunk behind the plate that attaches the solenoid to the tractor.

that actually should not matter.. solenoid is an isolated base..

Before you attempt to bypass the solenoid make sure the trans is in Neutral. Then confirm the trans is in Neutral. Then verify that the trans is in Neutral. Now that you know the trans is in Neutral you can bypass the solenoid by connecting one end of a jumper cable (red or black- it doesn't matter) to the battery terminal that is connected to one of the large solenoid posts. If your tractor is still 6V, Positive ground it will be the Negative post. If someone has done a 12V conversion it will probably be the Positive post. Then touch the other end of this same jumper cable to the post on the starter. Does it turn over?

This tractor has a 6 Volt System. I should have included that. Also the tractor has been used weekly and was parked for about six weeks. Went out to start it and all I got was the clicking of the solenoid.

Will give the bypass a try.

Gave the bypass a try....all I got was some spark off the starter while making the connection. It did not turn the motor.

Pull the starter off then use jumper cables and try to spin it over by hooking up a good ground to the frame of the starter then touch the other cable end to the stud for the solenoid and see if it spins over that way. If it does fair chance you have bad connections where your battery cables hook up or a poor ground. If it does not spin over take it to an auto parts store and let them check it most do it for free.

On a 6V system it is imperative that all wiring connections including grounds be shiny bright and tight. You may just have a dirty/loose connection or a weak battery.
