NAA steering shaft

While blowing snow ,after this weekends snow storm the steering wheel from my 54 NAA suddenly felt like it had lost all contact with the tractor. I can spin the wheel and even pull it and the shaft out about 10". Of course this happened at the neighbors mail box, about 1/4 mi. from my shop. Thanks to being raised on these tractors and icy roads, I was able to steer it home using the brakes. I've never opened a steering sector before but what can I expect to find and how easy is it to repair?

If it pulls out 10" and spins, the shaft is broke above the ball nut. Depending on where it broke, it might be repairable, or might need replaced. The I&T manual will have pictures and instructions to guide you.

ditto what john said.

mine on my 8n did that once, and I did repair it. pinned and welded the tube/rod.

the steering box is EZ to take apart.. and on a naa you can cheat and only take the central dash apart and not the entire hood sides.. etc.

Thanks for the advice on my steering problem. I was able to weld it but on the test run I found that I have 1/3 of a turn of play in the wheel. Is there a way of taking up this much "play" without taking it all apart again? Thanks

when you had it apart, that was the time to R&R the thrust bearings and adjust the shim stack.

if the steering wheel rises or falls slightly as you turn the wheel lock to lock with the front end jacked up.. you need to repalce those thrust bearings. if no rise / fall, check your sector adjustment.. you can do those externally.. loosent he sector stud lock nuts and then adjust the sector studs in with a large screwdriver till they just snug up.. don't try torquing them.. they will make the steering stiff if you do. adjust left side first.. then right side.

post back with details on the 1st question before adjusting the sector studs.

did you adjust the shim stack any?

Soundguy, I must admit that when I took the steering apart I was only interested in getting it working as quick as possible to finish blowing my neighbors driveway out (16" of new stuff).
I did aline the front wheels using a tape measure before I opened the sector and they remain the same after I set the gears back in.
The steering wheel does not move up or down when when it is turned.

I will adjust the sector studs later today and post back.

Thanks
Nilram
