1964 Ford 4000 Power Sterring

Guys I have a 1964 Ford 4000 that is giving me fits. I have rebuilt the control valve with new bearings and seals. I have put a very good hydraulic gage in the pressure line. When I turn it to the right stop it read 750 PSI, when I turn it to the left stop the gage reads 500 PSI. The tractor acts as if it has no power steering. Using the front bucket to raise up the tractor some it helps a lot but it is noy like it should be. Any help would be appreciated. Rodney

Is/are one or both steering cylinders leaking internally?

Would be of interest which 4000 you have! A utility, a row crop or an idustral.Assuming it is a 4 cylinder.

I'm not a thousand series guy, but this is what I would do on my 660. I think the systems are similar.

Disconnect the cylinders at the front and try the steering with the tractor running. Do the cylinders work properly and evenly? This might give you a clue.

My 660 had similar problem. One of the springs that operates one of the plungers inside the control valve was broken. Easy fix once the sheet metal is off. The test for this, at least on a hundred series, With the tractor off, move the steering wheel to the left about 2 inches, release the wheel and it should be pushed back to the center position by the springs. Do that again to the right and it should push back to the center. Easy test, if it does not spring back, you have valve problems. A broken spring is also evidenced by erratic motion of the disconnected cylinders.

If the 4000 system is different, forgive my ignorance.

they are drastically different tractors. the row crops have front bolsters and single draglink for steering, 1 cyl, valv ein cyl.. I'm guessing you DO NOT have this from your description f the work you did.

as others have said.

post a pic of your machine. it is sounding like an ag chassis

FWIW, the PS on all the ag style 4 cylinder tractors is identical.
Also, the 3 cyl ag models (with wishbone front end) is almost identical.
Both series share the same springs, plungers, upper and lower thrust bearings, spring washer and seals in the hyd block. The cylinders are the same too.
In fact, with a very slight rebending of the inlet and outlet lines to the pump a 4 cyl hyd block would work on a 3 cyl and vice versa.
Both series share the same sectors, bushings and seals in the bottom end too. Probably lower steering shaft bearing too.
