pin in shifter

601 series, 4 speed. Shifter is out of the cover assembly, new OEM pin in hand. I see the part line between the pin and the shifter, my drift fits it nicely. Solid back up and tried heat. Anybody have a trick??? Seems like I'm headed towards destroying the shifter or removing my left thumb. Thought I might ask before either occur. Thanks in advance, Jim.

Got it, thought I might describe how if someone is searching later. Cleaned the "smear" of metal from the pin on the shifter, punched center as best I could after finding the pin for certain. On the drill press drilled it out with a bit about 2/3 the size of the pin. Was not center when I got to the other side but not into the shifter. Drift slightly smaller than the pin and a solid lick and it moved then.
