851 hydraulic issue/draft control

New to tractors and lots of issues with an old 851. My 3pt hitch only raises a few inches under load, but will come up slowly with nothing attached. I can make it raise a load fully by firmly pushing the draft control selector down or pulling it up and holding it. However, the selector lever only moves from horizontal to about 45 degrees upward...it does not go in the vertical down, draft postion. I have the manual and read many posts, but don not get why putting pressure on the draft control lever allows it to lift? To date, I have only replaced the hydraulic fluid and bled the system (no bubbles, good flow). Any advice before I pull the cover?

inkage wear/adjustments wrong/etc. It is no wonder at all that you would not understand why pressure on draft/posn lever will result in raising, where otherwise it won't raise, as it takes some real study/observation/understanding of the linkages to see this cause/result. It is primarily related to the wear/adjustment problem noted and is an abnormal input to the control arm when you apply this pressure. About the most you can glean from it is that linkage is worn to point of being out of adjustment.

time for a service manual, top cover gasket / oring kit, and a cam follower pin.. and some wrench turning..

Thanks JMOR and Soundguy. I just ordered the video and gasket kit. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I get into it. Two quick ones though...how heavy is that cover and can you rotate the pin or do you need to weld a bead on it and reshape?

n vicinity of 100 pounds. Depends on how bad pin is...some rotated them, some replace them. Given all the work required to access, I replace. It is the cam face that some weld on if it is badly worn.
