Ford 4000 diesel starter

Hi I have a Ford 4000 3 cylinder Diesel. It has been super hard to start for the last couple years. So bad that I have to shoot a small amount of starting fluid into the air cleaner to get it going. Once it starts and runs for a few minutes I can turn it off and on all day without any problems. I have 2 suspicions as to what is going on but I want some input. First of all I have a Hi Tourque starter on the tractor, Is it possible that it may not crank the motor over fast enough to get enough compression? or second I feel that the engine has a little too much top end noise for me to be comfortable lately, The more RPM the more noise. Is it possible that the pistons are getting to worn? Creating low compression and a slapping noise? On a side note it also seems to not have much power. Any input would be appreciated.
