Rod, from what JDemarais had posted various times about rebuilding the DB Stannadyne pumps, I was about to order a kit for the pump on my 971 and dive into it, using the instructions that I already have down loaded. J. had stated that they are not difficult and that you don't really need to put them on a bench. Your statements on the 3500 fuel problems have given me pause. Will I need to spill time it after? The reason for the rebuild is approx. 5000 hours, and it won't start when hot unless I pour cold water over the pump and cool it down.

1) Rotary injection pumps are not spill timed.
2) Be careful if you take this pump apart. Some items DO require a test bench to get the calibration correct.
3) If you really have to pour cold water on it to get the engine to start, you're gonna need more than a seal and gasket kit. Better figure on a head and rotor = $$$.

Like Bern said... no spill timing on the rotary pumps. They are what they are. Probably the biggest thing about them is setting the position of the cam ring such that it properly limits maximum delivery. That can be done on the tractor most times tho... if necessary. It's easy with a dyno. It could be done within a reasonable margin of error just by observing smoke and usable power if you know the tractor well enough. Not something I'd really recomend tho, really... for all it costs to get a DB pump serviced.
John would also be the one to give you all of the specifics on rebuilding those pumps.... I really don't mess with them much myself.

the 961 originated at the Federal reasearch station in Fredricton and was sold 30 years ago to the chap I am bought it from in Shubenacidie. I live in the valley

Interesting... You really don't see many RC chassis Fords of that vintage around here. Most of that vintage were all utility chassis.
You far down the valley? I'm 20 minutes from the newf boat...
