Ford 5000 Piston

I got some new pistons for a Ford 5000 diesel block that I am boring. The new pistons have a smaller diameter and deeper combustion chamber than the originals. Will these work?

If the overall volume is the same, then yes. The most important thing is deck height, which is the amount the piston protrudes above the top of the block at TDC. Anything between 0 and .010" above will use a thin head gasket, and if you're between .010" and .023" above, you want the thick gasket. If your piston does not come up to the top of the block at TDC, you have bigger issues.

What should a thick or a thin gasket measure? I have a gasket set, not sure if it came with a thick or thin. Thanks for the help.

Did you get the right pistons for there are 2 different sizes. One was for a 5.2 bore and the later were for a 5.4 bore. The smaller was for the earlier engine and the larger for the later one.

I want to say that a thick gasket measures around .060" compressed (i.e. head torqued down), and the thin is around.040". These are approximate numbers.
