Can I put a loader on a 2N that will operate properly? I assume I need to put on a PTO hydrolic pump on. Is it a "live" PTO so the loader works if thr tractor isn't moving?

Most loaders on an N use a front mounted stinger pump.
Pump is driven by a shaft that goes through the crank hole in the grill
and runs directly off the engine crankshaft. Thus, live power.
I totally agree with the steering issue statement.
Not to mention, the front axle of an N is light duty. They wear out
and break pretty easily under the strain of a loader.
I have a loader on a 9N, and a loader on an NAA and recently
added power steering to the NAA.
They work great for light work, but are not going to cut it for heavy work.

Thanks for the info and advice. I do all of the tractor work and equipment maintenance for a ranch and equestrian facility using their JD 3020 loader tractor. The owner (a widow) wants a small tractor for the barn manager and horse trainer to use to drag the arenas. I found a nice 2N but she asked if we could put a loader on it. I'll advise her to allow me to do all of the loader work with the JD 3020, but if she wants a loader on the 2N, just use it for light work (shavings or moving some small hay bales). Any other weaknesses of a 2N verses 8N?
If you just have to have an N series tractor go with the late 8N. The 8N has one more forward gear if you only have the factory transmission but there was a couple add on aux transmissions like the Sherman which if a combo would give it 12 forward. Also the late 8N as in May of 1950 and later had as side mount distributor which by far was a heck of a lot better and that system held up far better then the front mount distributor. The front mount has a weak coil and was known to cause problems often. I have a late 1950 8N with both loader and back hoe and it sits a lot of the time not running but most of the time it will start right up with little or no work to it

9N/2N left brake pedal is on the left side with the clutch pedal.
Unless they're working and adjusted perfectly its hard to use the left brake.
A tad less HP than the later model 8N, but not enough to worry about.
Now the biggie - the 8N has position control on the 3 PT hitch, meaning you
can set it where you want it and it will stay there. It also has draft mode.
The 9N/2N only have draft mode, which adjusts itself constantly and does
not stay where you put the handle.
That can be overcome by buying Zane Sherman's "thang", which effectively
adds simple, exterior bolt on (5 minute) position control.
All the N's are good tractors in my book.

In my opinion the 4 speed in the 8N was the most rediculous transmission ever put in a tractor.
Reverse gear was so fast as to make it almost unuseable without an added step down transmission. First gear was awful fast too.
The 9/2Ns only had 3 gears but it was a better tranny - if only because it had a better reverse.
The 8N was a better tractor in most regards than a 9/2N - real drawbar, normal brake pedals, position control, more modern steering box and distributer on the later ones plus a few more ponies.
It was that reverse gear that killed those tractors for me.

Since they already have a loader tractor, I'm thinking that for the best money spent - Add a carrieall to the back. That should handle those small jobs with ease.

tractor not made for loader work just tears things up steering front end and such
i had one on mine 5 foot bucket and it would kill it in a hurry
so my advice is too run away and dont walk.
