2600 3-cyl diesel hard to start

Dad bought a 2600 last year (2011) and claimed it would start with just a touch of the key. Well, now it requires a shot of ether and considerable cranking and sometimes a horseshoe and a rabbit"s foot. It was really bad for a while this Fall. I changed the filter, then bled the injectors and it seemed to get alittle better. We"ve also been runninginjector cleaner through it and have adjusted the idle speed. But we still have to shoot it with ether. Anything else to check?

How about a weak battery, bad connections. You have to spin the engine fast enough to heat the air for proper combustion. It's winter now and batteries are at their lowest, oil is it's thickest, difference between ambient air and combustion temperature the widest to name a few.

Other thing is compression. If the rings are shot you will need a helper as I learned on the 3000 I own currently. I was new to diesels then and when it needed a shot of e go get it to crank on the dealer's lot in the spring, I should have RUN.

It's overhauled now and starts easily; oh and I have a new 5" starter, battery, and cables....stuff I bought before I came to the realization that it had shot rings.

Does it have thermostart? or a timing retard button? what does the manual advise for cold weather? what is the condition of the battery? They will crank for a long time without starting at just below needed crank speed.

Manual? I don"t think we have one. Just a bit more info.... The ether started during the Summer, so it prob"ly isn"t just the weather causing the problem. Battery is new 850 CCA. Cables look recent. We replaced the battery b/c it did seem to be turning slow.

Once it hits, it runs great.

A compression test will show you where you need to look next.
Weak injector pumps, and intake filters that are long overdo for service will cause hard starting too.
Remove, clean and check all battery cables, looking good does not always mean they are OK! The ground should be attached to the starter, or at least on the motor, clean the spot until it shines where it connects.
