The trade for the 8N and 2000 sounds like the best deal. All new wheels and tires aren't cheap. You might want to check if he has replaced the clutch. Those can be expensive to replace.
If it has a 2 stage clutch, it is a model 961 and that would indicate a 5 speed transmission, which takes some getting used to, and the reverse speed will probably be at least as fast as the 8N, or more. Those are the only drawbacks I can think of.
I have a 961 and love it. Will turn on a dime, and enough power to loaf at jobs that work an 8N. The live hydraulics and live PTO make up for the minor annoyances.
