thumping noise from rear of transmission case

I just bought a 1952 8N that has a thumping noise from the rear of the transmission case/hydraulic pump area.It stops with the clutch depressed. PTO and lift still work. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks
Wes

If it's thumping when you're trying to lift something, it is probably the hydraulic pump.
Does the thumping also stop when you have the PTO turned off and let the clutch out?

PS, YT also has a forum dedicated to the 9N/2N/8N tractors.
Lots of great guys there too that may have parts and advice for you.

My 8N "thumps" the same way. Its the hydraulic pump. I'll run it until it stops thumping and then rebuild the pump.

Common issue with 8N's, not a real problem for the most part. Just noisy!

"I'll run it until it stops thumping"
That's what I decided to do with my 9N too Kurt.
Mine isn't too bad yet, only thumps when I lift a heavy load at this point.
Quiet for smaller loads or no load.

Mine is a little worse than yours. I have a Woods belly mower on my 8N. I don't use the lift too much. But it knocks a bit when I mount my 600 lb. 6"ft 3 point mower. I can live with it.

The advise I got was to run it. A little knocking is normal on a worn pump. Won't hurt it a bit. Not really worth a rebuild unless it gets a lot worse.

The concern I would have about "running it till it breaks", is the pump casting (housing) is expensive and sometimes hard to find if the final destruction of the pump breaks the casting....the moving (wear) parts are available, so a rebuild is still possible. Also, I would rather work on a tractor when I don't need it to work for me than during a week when it is needed to do work (or I have something else I need or want to do). Maybe someone else will say how likely it is that a pump failure will break the casting.....I don't know the answer to that question.

Thanks for all the information. I am going to pull the pump and overhaul it,and put new seals and a bearing on the pto shaft. Cleaning the sump will also be on the agenda.
Thanks for the replies.
