head gasket

i have a TW-10 , i think the head gasket is blown. how can i make sure? any tell tale signs? seems like there is aterrible amount of steam/vapor coming out of the vent pipe. just use it to feed hay with is all. thanks !!

Steam/vapor from vent is usually just taking a long time driving moisture off because of not coming up to operating temp. I would want to try giving it a little more work before or after to see if it clears up. What does your temp read? How many hundreds of cattle are you feeding?

Ready for some bad news? If I were a betting man, I'd say you have a pinholed block. Head gasket failures on those tractors are almost unheard of.

If it were me, I'd drop the pan, pressurize the cooling system, and take a look. If the block is pinholed, strip it down and have a machine shop sleeve ALL 6 holes.

The usual telltale on a bad head gasket is the puking of coolant out the overflow every minute or two (depending on severity)... and black frothing of the coolant when you remove the rad cap.
What you see could range from being fairly normal to plain worn out depending on how bad it really is.... or as Bern suggested... actual steam could well indicate a pinholed block. If it is a block problem you will generally find coolant in the oil at some point, probably sooner than later.

Will almost bet it is not a headgasket but a pin hole in a cylinder. I have resleeved dozens of these blue ford blocks,If you keep running it you will wipe out the bearings and destroy the crank. Better park it.

waht would be an estimate( i know this could vary widely} to resleeve this block? not really sure how this is done? could you explain a bit , please?

600-1000 for all 6 holes... The last one I had done was for 75 per hole but that was quite some time ago.
You MIGHT get those pistons for 150-200 each if you look around.

Strip down block bare. Take to machine shop. Machine shop bores out cylinders, and then presses in a thick wall sleeve. Then they bore the ID of that sleeve back down to standard size.

Bern explained it nicely. About 125.00 to 150.00 per hole to bore and sleeve. I sell the complete out of frame kit for 800.00.That will give you some idea. All this can be avoided by using coolant conditioner.
