640 piston hydraulic pump roller bearing

I just rebuilt the piston type hydraulic pump on my 640. I lubricated the needle bearing and the seal. Should I lubricate the roller bearing? it is located on the "wet" side of the seal so I was not sure.

Thanks!

I've never been in to one of those pumps.
But as a general rule, when it comes to bushings and bearings a bit of prelube is always a plus.
It might take a few minutes - sometimes even an hour of running to pull enough oil from the rear end up into that pump to make it prime.
A bit of grease will wash out quickly when it does prime and is cheap insurance in the meantime.

Okay, I had some grease in it, but not like packing a front wheel bearing if you know what I mean. Is that what you had in mind? just a little grease to get by until priming?

I generally use white lithium grease on things like that.
I would not hesitate to squeeze a teaspoon full into, onto, around and beside the bearing and race.
As long as it didn't interfere with assembly, why not?
Lube is cheap compared to hard parts.

When I rebuilt my 660 piston pump, I put wheel bearing grease on the needle bearings, the roller bearing and little bit on the seal and shaft. Put some on the wobble shaft, thrust bearing, and plate also. Seems to have worked just fine.

The needle bearing get splash oil from engine oil coming up through the gears. The roller bearing gets oiled from the hydraulic fluid. So running lube is well addressed by the design.

Thanks for the help guys! Based on what I am hearing it should be okay with the amount of lube I put on it. I ran it and it primed within minutes and lifted fine. The pump never felt hot and there was no chattering.

i agree.. I'd see no problem lubing the seals and bearings, even if they will be splash or imersed lubed later.

I pact pto beairng snad lube the selas and the entire assemble in wheel beairng grease when i R&R them... same with the ballnut and other bearings in a steering box.

i don't see how it could hurt as long as it goes back together correctly..
