NAA electric question..

NAA 6 volt electrical questions.

I have a starting problem with a NAA I just picked up.

These might be dumb questions, but I need to ask, I struggle with + ground.

Does the starter solenoid need to make good contact with the chassis and which terminal is battery and which is starter?

My son replaced it after someone said it was bad, now it won't do anything.

I had 4 cables, 1 batt, 1 starter, 1 switch and I guess 1 to amp or the terminal block?

Also, on the starter button, it seems I have continuity thru it regardless if it's pressed or not, so I'm thinking I need a new starter switch for sure.

Sounds like you have the wrong solenoid to me. It should be a 3 post version. One big post goes to the starter. One big post goes to the battery negative, and the one small post goes to the starter switch on the top of the transmission.

If you have a four post version, there are two types. For most of them, to activate the starter, you need to wire a push button switch between the to smaller terminals. If you do that you loose the neutral safety switch. I do not recommend that, very dangerous.

If by some chance you have the other type of four post solenoid, life gets more complicated

If it were my tractor, I would get the right solenoid and get that safety switch working.

You should not have continuity through your push button unless it is pressed.
Replacing it requires removing the top cover of your transmission because
there is a nut on the bottom of the switch that is held in place by a locking plate.
However, if it worked before, I would double check the continuity tests.
The solenoid needs to be a three terminal type made for tractors.
One big wire to the starter, one big wire from the battery.
On the big wire from the battery is also a small wire to your terminal.
Small terminal on the solenoid comes from the push button.
No ground required for the case.
It will not work if you have the starter side and battery side reversed.
You can tell which side goes to the battery by measuring continuity between it and the little post.
Starter side should not have continuity, battery side will have a low resistance.
