6610 Thermostart

I am trying to understand the Thermostart. The manual shows a position on the switch for it, but there is no detent. Is is just midway between on and start?

The tractor has the Thermostart mounted in the manifold.

IIRC you turn the key till the dash lights just go out, but the starter is not engaged yet. And then count slowly to 20. then crank.

David,
Some of the replacement switches turn the other way to engage the thermostart. Like 5 positions.
left thermostart then far left start, right run then far right normal start.
You never know what switch is on it unless YOU are the one that replaced it.

The OEM switch has no detent for the preheat position. Not sure there ever was. When the dash lamps go out, thermostart is activated, and is also powered in the crank position.

NH must have changed suppliers of their key switches then, because 10 years ago when I last bought one, the thermostart position was most defintely detented.

I think you are in the weeds this time, Bern. Been at it 16 years now, and when I started, the new replacement Diesel/Thermostart key switches then were exactly the same as the new ones today. My original Thousand Series Op manual specifies holding the key switch in the 'heat' position, although it references switches with the preheat and heat/crank positions to the left from 'off'. I can't think of a single Ford or New Holland key switch with a detented preheat or glowplug position. Pretty much a safety issue, I would think.

I agree. My Ford 4610 manual doesn"t reference any detent on the key switch for the Thermostart. It says to hold the key between the Run and Start positions.

Sorry Bern... but there's no detent for the thermostart on the Lucas switch. Never was that I recall. Some have a spot on them where you mabey feel a bit more resistance but they are by default spring loaded so that they can't be left activated.

Rod and Rick,

We have a definite misunderstanding here and a hangup on terminology. By detented, I mean a "bump" that you can feel, however I do know that it IS spring loaded, meaning it returns to the run position. I never meant or implied that the switch would actually STAY in the heat position.

The key switch I am talking about has 2 positions to the right for acc and run, and then the next two positions are for heat and then start. The last two positions are spring return, however, you can defintitely "feel" the heat position as you turn the key, giving you a sensation that one knows where to stop. That's what I meant by detented. In retrospect, I think I could have chosen a different word, I just don't know what that word is at this moment in time.

You guys both know me well enough to know that I wasn't trying to say that the key switch would actually STAY in the heat position, right? :)

I couldn't imagine what you meant because I'm sure you did know better... I just take detent to mean 'hold'. I agree that there is a place of somwhat more resistance in the switch where the thermo is activated tho. At least on new switches.

I also think of a detent as a device either mechanical or hydraulic that holds a control element in a certain position.
