Opinion on Ford 9600

I am looking at my next project tractor, and have always been impressed by the 9000 series. There are a few 9600's on tractorhouse, what is your opinion on that model.

I had one for a few years. Liked the power and efficiency, but the engine was getting tired and I didn't like the cab. It was louder inside than out. Pretty crude by today's standards...but a whole lot easier to work on. Some parts are NLA from New Holland. I still like them. Even if some people (accurately) describe them as big, dumb power.
Check to make sure it shifts correctly, steers properly when the oil is warmed up, and that the hubs are tight on the axle shaft.

I have a 9600 and it's a good basic unit but as was said the cab leaves a lot to be desired. On the plus side it does keep the snow and rain off. The only problems I've had was with the dual power and PTO but dealer took care of that.

It's "big dumb power" like an IH 1066 but a whole lot more operator friendly. 1960's design. I remember the dealer that I now work for had 4 on the lot in 1976 and they could be bought for $16000 each. I know where 3 of them are, still running. Whereabouts of the 4th one, unknown.

Not only more operator friendly, but not as thirsty as a 1066.
The one I traded in on my TW35 was within 50 hours of rolling the hour meter over, and by what the previous owner said, had never been majored.

Ironically, I just bought one of "those" Ford 9600s that was advertised in Tractorhouse/Fastline in the last month. It is an awesome tractor. Open platform with ROPS canopy (just like the original ads). Owning old tractors is just fun.

I have a 1971 9000 with approx. 10,000 hours and never been majored, and it is still a very good running powerful tractor. You can see it on U-tube by entering Deerfield Fair antique tractor pull 2012 Ford 9000. there are two, mine is the NFE.

ive been trying to find a 9600. whats good about them cabs though you can take them off unlike the other tractors those cabs arnt hard to take off although most with cabs wont come with the fiberglass fenders.

We have a Ford 9000 with who knows how many hours on it. The tach didn"t work when we bought it and the guy we bought it from said the tach never worked when he bought it. Clutch petal wear look like 10000 plus hours. We put a reman engine in 1000 hours ago. I fixed the tach when we got it with a new cable.

We used it on the 15" stalk chopper this fall. Was running about 7 to 9 psi of boost at 2000 rpm.

Weak points are the PTO drive hub splines, shifting and park linkages, and block perforation from cavitation.

Easy on fuel and start good if the cold start button is pressed when below 50.
