861D. Won't stay running

New to the forum and I need a little help I have a Ford 861 diesel that ran fine last week and now started dying. It runs for a few minutes then starts missing and puffing white smoke. It looses all power winds down and eventually dies. I have changed the filter and no help. The more I work with it the shorter time it will stay running. But it always fires right off. Also one bolt that holds in inj. Pump in broke off. Any help would be great.

I'd look for a restriction. Either in the tank, the line between tank and filter, the line between filter and pump or the return line.

You also need to get the broken bolt fixed.

Thanks I seem to have good flow to the filter but have not checked the flow from the filter to the pump will try any other suggestions would be great.

The beauty of diesels is that problems are pretty much 99% of the time either lack of fuel or lack of fuel. In order to be helped you need to define "good flow to the filter". Many times good flow for ten seconds is still way too little.

Sounds like governor flex ring has failed inside injection pump. Confirm by letting fuel leak out at timing window cover next time it starts to die. If it speeds back up and acts ok, pump needs serviced to correct, and return line back to tank may need cleaned too. Any return restriction in return side will shut injection pump down.

I cracked the timing window and that helped but when I contacted a pump repair shop about having it fixed they told me to breakout the glass ball in the check valve in the return line. I did that and now the tractor runs fine. I was told if the flex ring had broken that I would find something like coffee grounds in the pump I don't see anything or do I see fuel in my oil
