Ford 881 with Wagner loader quit working?

I have a 1959 Ford tractor with a Wagner loader and was lifting up a tree limb and then the loader quit working, but was making a grumbling noise. I was able to back the tractor into my yard. If you lift something too heavy can you damage a seal in the pump? It has 2 pumps, one for the three point and one up front that runs off of the crank for the loader, I think. What do you think I broke? Dale Kingston, IL

my fork lift makes a pretty good growling sound when it gets low on oil. Did you check the level?

First off do you have the hyd tank for the loader full of oil????????? If yes then check that the spline shaft has not wore to the point that the shaft slips in the center spline hub. Almost takes 2 people to check the shaft spline problem by having one raise the loader to max and hold it so see if the shaft stops spinning. Another sort of way is do the lift thing and if the engine does not sound like it is laboring then yep good chance the spline has wore out on the shaft and it is slipping

as old said.

does it have oil?

is the pump actually turning with the drive shaft?

pump cracked / lines split?

if pump is turing, shut down and take input line to vlve off and aim in bucket and see if pump is making flow.

if yes, shut down and hook back up..

take the return to tank line off and ai'm into bucket and start tractor.. now try to lift loader. oil should be diverted to the lift cyl, and not have oil bypassing the valve or relief .. if you get oil inthe bucket.. either relief is stuck or spool is bypassing.

post back more details.

I am pretty sure it was full of oil. There is a filler cap on the loader arm that is close to the front right engine. It said to fill it up close to the top vent cap. There was no oil leaking or broken hose, must be my spline shaft if bad. I will take it off tonight for further review. Thanks, Dale

As I said start it up lift the loader as far as it will and if the engine does not labor you will probably hear a rattle sort of sound which says the splines are striped out. BTDT to many times over the years and just did one that the loader front mount broke and the loader fell and snapped off the coupler

Shaft on pump is worn out and slipping. change all the fittings on the shaft, front and rear that show any wear as its nearly impossible to get to.

Also install new belts on the loader at this time!

Bill, the shaft is not spinning. Like you guessed, the splines on the shaft are probably bad. Can I order new shafts/splines? I got it into the garage tonight and will tear it apart tomorrow. I have no loader at all now. Dale

Dear Old Man, the shaft is not turning when I started the tractor tonight. The shafts are worn out is my guess. can i order new ones? I will remove the pump tomorrow. I was hoping they had an allen screw or keyway that broke. I have never had this apart, but will learn! I don't know if you can order any old Wagner loader parts or if this is from Ford. Thanks for the help, I will ask more dumb questions Sunday! Dale

Replace both the shaft and hub at the same time.Reason I say that is the hub the shaft slips into wears at the same time the shaft does so if you only replace the shaft the hub will eat the new shaft and it will not last very long and it is not a fun job to have to do twice

You can get all the parts form New Holland dealers. I just did a loader on a Ford 3000 where the loader front mount broke and dropped the loader down and snapped a part of the shaft drive line and called Case and ordered the part no problem

Mr. Old man, the spline shaft was wore down to the nub. I went to the New Holland dealer to see if they could order me another one. The spline bracket that bolts to the motor side was almost perfectly round inside. I need to order or make another one along with new shaft. are there aftermarket places to get these old parts? You hit it right onthe head. It was a pain in the rear to get to, but should work when I am done. Do you fill the loader through the vent cap up on the top right arm? There is a large cap by my right foot, but oil pours out when you loosen that cap. Dale Earnhardt Swineheart

Soundguy, the spline shaft was completely wore out. I took it to the New Holland dealer to see if they make an aftermarket part. the engine side bracket was bad along with the shaft. How do I check for proper oil level? Through the vent cap on the high part of the loader bracket? it has a large cap down low by my right foot, but oil pours out when you take it off. Dale

This site as will the New Holland dealer of Vaul-bilt all should have bot the crank shaft hub and the spline shaft. I have learned over the years to replace both or have trouble soon after. As for the hyd oil ALL cylinders closed and yes fill till almost to the top in that vent cap. If you fill it to full oil will seep out that vent cap which does not hurt any thing other then making a mess
