This is a true story about Dexter a friend of ours. He and my brother have been good friends since high school. He is a good hearted person but different substances robbed him of his family and macular degeneration has robbed him of most of his sight. His parents bought him a couple of acres and a double wide out in the country. He bought a horse as a form of conveyance to and from the little store down the road she is a every gentle old horse. They seem to be perfect for one another and has learned to take him home if it has gotten dark unexpectedly or if he is not in a condition to steer. He just wraps his arms around her neck and says lets go home and she does. One day on the way to the store He has to cross a small bridge about a half mile from the house and the horse starts getting spooked the closer to the bridge the worse it gets till she will not cross. He leaves her and goes to look and see what is the matter. On the creek bed below was an 8ft alligator so he goes back to the horse and pulls his rifle out of his scabbard and shoots him. He goes back to the house and gets a rope and leaves horse far enough away not to see what he was doing, then ties the rope to the tail of the alligator and the other end to the saddle. Everything is going fine as he rides down the side of the road until the gator slides up on the pavement and the horse looks back after hearing it. Well she takes off and her eyes get bigger and runs faster every time she looks back and sees it behind her. Afraid that the horse is going to have a heart attack there is nothing he can do but hold on and try to calm the horse. When they make the sharp turn onto the dirt road he lives on the gator slides around beside the horse so she goes even faster. They get to the house and right through the back gate and into the barn and stops. His Dad stops by on his way home from work to find Dexter cleaning the gator. Having a weak stomach he starts throwing up from the smell and laughter as he hears the story. Ron |
