I have an 800 5-speed. When I put it in third gear, it jumps out within a few revolutions.I pulled the cover off the tranny and the gears look good, no chips or missing teeth. Ideas?

Have an 861 that did the same thing...didn"t want to mess with it myself...although I thought it may be something simple I didn"t want to take it apart and then not be able to fix it....thought the worse but was presently surprised to find the repair bill was for labor only as there were no broken parts...just adjustments made. I don"t remember what exactly but I do remember that the large screw heads on the side of the tranny all had the paint removed

Someone must have replaced the detent balls and springs.

Doing so sometimes helps prevent gear jumping under overhauling (coasting) loads in transmissions that are not too badly worn but rarely if ever helps gear jumping issues when under load.

Your 5 speed transmission is a constant mesh design. Gear engagement is made by sliding couplers much like automotive transmissions (sans synchronizers). If it jumps out of gear under load, it is almost certainly due to well worn engagement teeth on the sliding couplers and meshing teeth on the corresponding gears.

Proper repair will be time consuming and very expensive.

ditto what the others siad.

I have an 850 that will do it now and then.

I installed a 4" spring to the dash with a sheet metal screw.. spring has a hook end. once in 3rd gear i slip the stiff spring on.

has never jumped out when tied it.

that's the redneck bandaid fix on that beater auction find laoder tractor.. it's not the correct fix.. which may be like awhtx points out.

trnas disassembly.. etc..

Mine did the same thing. It was the 3rd-Reverse sliding coupler that had worn out teeth. Complete transmission disassembly was required to replace it.

Sounds like a worn detent, or weak/broken detent spring.
