Oil Additives

I have a 63 2000 that is using some oil and there is some blow by out the oil filler cap. It uses a quart of oil about every 10 hours. What do you guys think of some of the oil additives like Restore or some others? Worth the money, do they work or could they cause damage?

I believe that most snake oils do no harm.
Beyond that I can't say much.
But you have an engine that's burning oil. Rebuild is gonna cost at least a grand if you do it yourself. Rebuild in a can is maybe $20?
What do you have to lose?

For the year you gave the tractor has no sleeves in it so I would not use Restore. Restore is hard to machine if you would deside to rebuild it. You could try one of the so called high mileage oils. If you use the tractor a lot I would do an over haul on it.

Most snake oils are just that and a waste of $$ some can/will harm your engine. What weight oil do you use in it?? If running say a 10W30 oil switch to a straight weight oil and that will help a lot. A 10W30 oil is a 10W oil with additives that make it sort of work like a 30W when hot but still all in all it is a 10W oil

Snake oil ? has been asked many times, you will get both sides and you will have to decide.

I would recommend going with a thicker oil and using slower RPM's.

I bought a new lawn mower and from day one it used oil. Sounded to me like they had the governor set to hi. With no tack, I just slowed the motor a little and it stopped using oil.

A quart on oil in 10 hours isn't that bad. Look at your plugs for oil deposits and soot. It will take many quarts of oil to pay for a rebuild.

I have a motor that doesn't use a drop of oil in 75 hours, then it starts using oil. Something breaks down in the oil after 75 hours. Time to change oil.

First slow down, use a thicker oil, make sure carb is lean as possible, no black soot on plugs, and then if you want add snake oil to see if there is any change.

Sounds good. I will try the thicker oil. I already run low rpms. Maybe it will help. For sure there will be no rebuild until it gets much worse. At 50 hours a year it should last a good while longer. I will hold off on the "snake oil" for a while.

what oil do you use now?

if a 10-30 I'd go to a 15w40

or.. just add oil at 10 hrs.... if you use it 50hrs a year.. that's 5 quarts...

5qts a year is an oil change.

slap a new filter on it each year and you got a continual oil change going..

walmart quarts of oil are less then 3$ or gallons are less than 13$

Run a diesel rated 15W40 in it and see what happens... Beyond that I'd say you're getting due for a rebuild if the oil consumption bothers you a lot.
To put things in perspective tho... a green leaker can go through a gallon of oil in less time so don't feel too bad. The lunch time stop is quite literally to top off the oil and check the fuel...

I have been using the 10-30 so I will change to a heavier weight. Living in the South with the warmer temps should allow me to do that anyway. Thanks and I will go with what ever it does until it gets much worse.

i run a 15w40 c rated oil in all mine but 3 now. one gets a 10-30 syn after a parial rebuild.. and the 2 others are diesels getting 5w40 syn.

I believe your consumption issues will significantly taper with 15w40.

my wifes 2000 yukon/5.3l will guzzle 5w30, and gulp 10w30, but only sips 15w40..
