I hope you'll all put up with a question about a Ferguson tractor. Did Elenco make a front wheel drive conversion for any Ferguson tractors? Specifically a TO-35. I'm interested in finding parts to add the Elenco conversion to my tractor. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello Matt , It depends on which model and what kind of condition it is in . Is it on a tractor(that runs and drives) ? does it work ? Thanks Tony

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to seeWhy the e-mail??? There are no doubt others who would like to know the purpose of the torque limiter & how it functioned as well. Besides, it might help Tony in not having to answer this question again & again....the answer will be in the archives for all to find in the future.

Hello JMOR , The Torque Limiter is basically a larger version of the slip clutch on bush hog mower . The Torque Limiter will slip at 525 foot pounds of torque hopefully before you snap an axle or twist off a u-joint . They first came into production in August 1958 . As Ford and aftermarket loaders were getting stronger and guys were installing bigger buckets that was the beginning of the abuse they could throw at them and 99% of the guys NEVER have enough counterweight on the back of their tractors to keep the rear wheels on the ground so that also loads the front drive more than it should be . The Torque Limiter is an Elenco Design and was patented so no other parts fit them , sometimes repairable many times not I make some parts for them . The faced drive plates have always been the problem to reproduce , mostly old tech no longer used and or rarely used today (spraying molten bronze on a cast iron plate, similar to spray welding a crankshaft) , IE EXPENSIVE . Thanks Tony

There have been quite a number of Ferguson 4wd conversions done through the years. Everything from the grey Fergie on up. A number of 35's were converted using old Land Rover front axles. The most popular way appears to have been to use a sandwich box after the transmission. I believe Selene and Roadless also did conversions for them but I've never heard of an Elenco. Sam

Hello Sam , You never heard of ELENCO'S because they were not exported to England , I know Selene made some kits but they were not imported here in the USA as far as I know , and I don't know of Roadless making any kits for small M-F tractors only a handful for the larger tractors . Thanks Tony

Hello Phill , Elenco didn't make any M-F Conversions until the mid 60's . I had one 1965 M-F 204 TRACTOR the only one of the bunch I have been able to locate so far . Where are you located ? I would have to see one apart to be able to tell if we can make it a 4x4 at a resonable cost . Thanks Tony

Since the 4 wheel drive subject was brought up, did Elenco make the 4 wheel drive conversons for the 2000 series MF tractors in the early 80s? I know they were available, since I have seen a 2805 with it. What a monster

Hello Wayne , By the early 80's most manufacturers were installing their own four wheel drive conversions on the assembly line , Ford was using Italian(Carrado) and German (ZF) axles I believe , M-F could have used similar . Elenco was closed by then and I do not remember Coleman(I think at that time they were only making IH axle conversions) making any M-F axle conversions . Thanks Tony

Don't mean to intrude, but Tony send me an email at griasev@aol.com I've got some questions on torque limiter and tire sizes. Thanks.
