I'm sure there are people out there that have a way to paint the raised Ford lettering on the sides of the hood. Can I hear suggestions?
Thanks,
Terry

I do not think that most people are satisfied with either the stencils or vinyl letters. If you have a steady hand, painting with a "pin striping brush" works pretty well. A pin striping brush has very long bristles that allow you to lay down a controlled width, straight line of paint.

There is another way that you will find in the archives. It basically amounts to painting the stencil area FIRST with a number of coats of red paint to get a thick layer. Then paint over with the grey. After the grey has set up you use a sanding block with 400 grit wet or dry sandpaper to sand through the grey to the red.

If your sanding is better than your painting I would try this method.

How we always used to do them was a tee shirt over a wooden block. Just wet the shirt with paint and use it like an ink blotter.

Or you could buy the script vinyl letters on ebay

Here's another idea. You can take some tracing paper and trace the raised letters then go to a sign shop and have them make a stencil using self-adhesive vinyl. Put it on as a stencil and then paint. It would be easier to separate the letters when putting it on. You can go to an auto paint store and buy some vinyl tape used for pinstripping to cover any gaps where the letters come together.

I used the pin stripping tape and carefully taped around each letter, then painted. A lot of work but it worked well. Good smooth edges. When applying vinyl tape be sure to press the edges down.

I have two fenders to do and I'm going to prime them, apply several coats of the red, apply a mask and then paint the gray. I tried painting with a brush but was not happy. I was using Omni MTK.

There is. You can buy them to spray paint over.

I've never used them, but I would be afraid they would lift and you'd get

over-spray unless you used the stencil and then brushed or rolled over it.

Edit - here's and example. fleabay

I used an artist brush and painted three thin coats to get the correct coverage.

I did the separate sides lying downbefore putting them together. less chance of run that way. I poured a small amount into a small container so that it would thicken a little. Then I went at it with a soft bristle brush.

Someone once posted here that the factory rolled it on with a long, curved ink blotter type tool.

I just painted mine on my 660 with a fine brush. Used Valspar paint and hardener. Might not be perfect, but it looks good from 10 feet away.

I have both the decals to go on the FORD letters, and also the stencels to allow painting over. I chose to use neither of them. Every Ford tractor I have observed at shows that had the decals installed, or had been painted using the stencels left something to be desired to consider it a quality job. Therefore I lovingly sweet talked my wife into painting the letters with her pro-like steady hand. Only requirement from her was to be able to paint them before they were installed on the tractor. she used my flat welding table. I was very pleased with the outcome. Dan Robertson
