The PTO locks in hard and the use of the clutch does not have any effect on it. Trans operates good with the clutch.

Have sheared two pins already trying to engage PTO for brush hog.

Any ideas!!

I assume that you have the live PTO with the double clutch, and not the independent PTO? Sounds like the PTO clutch is stuck. You could try blocking the clutch pedal all of the way down for a couple of days to see if it frees up. Otherwise you may need to split the tractor and see what's up with the clutch.

If you need to mow now, you could try engaging the PTO lever with the engine off and then start the engine. That should spin it up a little slower than jamming the lever in when it's running. Start the engine with the PTO disengaged first and raise the 3 point arms, and then shut it off and engage the PTO lever and then start it up.

IIRC, the 2810 has an independant PTO. Put it this way... if it's got internal wet brakes inside the rear axle, it's got an IPTO. If it's got the old outboard drum brakes then it's got a 2 stage clutch...

The IPTO... you can feather somewhat by gradually engaging the lever. 3 cylinder tractor were NOT known for their agility in feathering... but a 10 series is somewhat better than the older models. They had the full on BANG type of engagement.

Yes the 2810 is IPTO.
And sometimes they do slam into gear really hard.
You might have to shut the tractor off, engage the pto then start it with the pto engaged.
That should soften the start a little.
PIA I know but better than replacing shear pins.

Note in the attached image item #86. Notice two choices. The second choice is called a feathering stop. It is a bracket that goes around the shift handle, with a bolt in the middle that lets you pause for a moment while engaging the clutch. It may help a lot.

(quoted from post at 17:41:03 10/12/12) The 2810 has IPTO, not live.

I was going on this info from the New Holland parts web site, on the line right above the line that Bern has highlighted in his picture:

07E01 LIVE TRANSMISSION POWER TAKE OFF ASSY., W/DOUBLE CLUTCH - 231,234,334,530A,2310,2610,3610,[b:25d56d11d1]2810[/b:25d56d11d1],2910,3910

I don't know if that's a mistake on New Holland's part, but the original poster made a comment about the clutch not making any difference with his problem, as if he knew that the clutch would make his PTO engage smoothly prior to the problem occurring, so I assumed that he had the live PTO model and not the independent PTO model.

Parts manuals often cover more than one model tractor, even though you choose "2810" in the menu option.

That manual likely covers ALL 3-cylinder 10 series tractors. I don't know them all, but I think it goes something like this: 2310, 2810, 2910, 3610, 3910, 4610.

I may have messed some of that up, but you get the point.

Yeah, but when it only applies to some of the models, it usually says that on the title of the drawing, and the drawing for the live PTO with the double clutch specifically says 2810 in the title of that drawing page. That's why I made the 2810 in bold in my last reply, to point that out.

A lot of things in PAL are not quite as they sometimes appear... or as they should be.
Bern is correct in what he said... but there could also be an error in PAL that would show what you saw.
Regardless, the tractor has an IPTO.
