Is there a Ford gas tractor that can go slow enough and powerfull enough to handle a tiller? Don't want an SOS.

i have a tiller on my 3600 3cyl gas.

Depends on how new you want to go. If you're talking *01 or early *000 series the SOS is the only one that will handle it well. Anything prior to *01 I'd say no!

as has been mentioned.

something with a howard or everette tranny.. or an sos 10spd. past that.. wait till 1965 and a 3cyl with an 8spd will shine.

I HAVE run a 4' tiller on an a 951 in soil that was an existing garden..a dn it was 'ok' I'd think plowing might have been more fun.. but my stepdad didn't have a plow.. but did have the tiller.. :)

Dad had an 860 with a 50" Howard Rotavator in the early 60's after he ditched the moldboard plow. Did not handle it well. Solution was a 4000 w/SOS. That setup lasted a long time. 5000 w/8-spd worked well too.

The live PTO 5 speed is marginaly acceptable in some soils but unacceptable in most.

The SOS is the cat's meow.

Later model 8 speeds should be OK in nearly all soils.

I have used my father's tiller on my 850 in sandy soil. It did OK with 2 passes. I like to till in both directions anyway, so not a big deal. If you want 1-pass tilling, then you would need something else, but in 1st gear at medium throttle, it chews up the ground fairly well. Even my walk-behind tiller moves faster and needs to go over the ground twice.

I use a 5ft tiller on my "72 2000 with the 8-speed tranny. It"s a pretty heavy unit and I till in 1st if newer ground. If I"m going over my existing garden 2nd gear will do fine.
