These Ford tractors were never imported in Europe nor Britain. We had the Fordson Major & Dexta followed by the Worldwide 1000 Series built in Basildon England.

A hand full of this style of Fords have been imported in recent years from the USA by collectors .

This particular tractor had an S-o-S gear box which no gears were working. The specialist S-o-S guy here has been trying to sort it out. Main problem is the US S-o-S gearbox is completely different to the ones used in the 1000 Series tractors, different bands and torque settings, even the cable is different length. Finally done after several weeks of head scratching and getting parts & settings manual sent over from USA.

Guys,

If it helps, from my past job, I know of a company that manufactures fuel and oil filters in low volumes. No project is typically too big or too small. I know the guys there well and may be willing to work with them to make a filter available. Or if not me, I'll hook up whoever with them. I will say that while it may not be super cheap, but it would be made in the USA and would be a good quality part.

Shoot me an email at krleppert attt gmail dottt com and we can talk more. I don't get on here as much as I'd like and may not see a response...

Thanks,

Kevin

Only TWO of these tractors were imported into Britain both by Ford Motor Company. They were used to evaluate the S-o-S transmission, photographs of them were published in Stuart Gibbards definitive Ford tractor history book.

Both tractors were either scrapped or more likely shipped back over to the US. There were no spares available for these tractors so Ford would not have allowed them to be sold onto the British market

This happened with all companies, I remember seeing a Cockshutt tractor here in 1969 which had been imported by Perkins to have a Perkins diesel engine fitted. This was cut up in 1978-9.

Hello again KFD , Here again Ford did import those tractors all over the world maybe not in large quanities in England or anywhere else but they did go over there , So while they are not a RARE tractor they would be uncommon there . Many parts between the 4 cyl. SOS trans. and the 3 cyl. SOS trans. are the same , but the shifting cables are not as you have said . On that particular tractor the shift lever on the selector is a 3 cyl. shift lever because it is longer than what came from the factory on a 4 cyl. tractor . The tractor also appears to be a late 1959 or a 1960 model 871 which has only the single speed 540 rpm pto option on it . Thanks Tony

It looks like an 871D missing the eggcrate grille. It appears to have the correct 12V diesel generator with the cooling fan and only one cutout in the housing for the air to exit located on the lower, inside quadrant.

Nice machine once sorted out. The worlds firist power shifting tractor transmission.

Are you aware that there is a no-longer-available transmission oil filter beneath the transmission top cover?

Tony Jacobs, here in the US, has been speaking with WIX to see if they will continue to manufacture the filters but I have not heard any update about this issue lately.

Tony: If you are listening, please let us know what, if anything, is happening. I have only one left, which I plan to use when I rebuild the SOS in my 64 4000.

Dean

Hello Dean , As of the last I spoke with them they were waiting for approval from New Holland , personally I doubt they will get it they do not seem to be too interested in doing anything about it as I have spoke with a couple of Ford/NH enginneers I know and they did not have much good to say either . Call me at my shop if you would like to know how I am converting mine to 6000 spin on units , it is easier than typing it out . Thanks Tony

Tony, How about Dennis Carpenter? have you tried them? It seems to me that they would jump on these filters.

Hello Showcrop , I have not spoke with Dennis or Kevin about them , I was kind of waiting to hear from Wix but was not going to hold my breath . I have loaded Kevin up with all the parts for samples and blueprints needed for the next batches of parts(power steering lines, fuel lines, more lights, more gauges, and more clips) to be made but I will give them a call tommorrow and see what happens . Thanks Tony
