forgot to turn the switch off and now no spark how do you check switch could i disconnect it the to coil and ground to see if have spark there.
 
Not likely to be the switch that is bad but I can almost bet you burned up the points. Easy way to know for sure is open up the distributor by pulling the cap rotor dict cover and have a look see at the points. Any time the key is left on the points almost always burn and then you have not spark
 
I had already pulled rotor cap and cover off that is how i checked for spark looks like may need new points or could the old one be cleaned and filed.
Could the coil have been damaged
 
They could be cleaned, filed and re-gapped, at least for a test.
Some say they don't last as long after they've been filed.
Do you have power to the coil and the points when they're open? As in battery voltage?
 
Very likely the old points are burns to bad to file. As for the coil as long as the bottom of it is still flat it most likely is ok. But if the bottom of it is bowed out you may have to also replace it but I would not do so till you did the points
 
Once burned most points are so far gone that filing them will not do the job. I have pulled them off and used a bench grinder and made them work but a simple file job I have yet to make work if burned badly
 
A Chrysler service bulletin said good quality points are too hard to file.Points get very hot in normal use,oxides form that insulate the points.I have cleaned the points with a pocket knife and got engines running.I favor a diamond file but the diamond particles do come loose from the bonding.
 
as others said.. you may be able to clean and regap.. if they were cheap poiunts with a palstic rubbing block.. it may have melted.. so check that. premium set with a phenolic or nylon block probably survived..
