650 Steering

I have 2 N's but am new to the 650. The steering is really tight and requires a lot of muscle to turn with the bigger tires on the front. I have greased all the visible zerk fittings but I cannot find the plug in the steering box to add grease. Would appreciate any suggestions and help! Thanks in advance for your help!

follow the round column tube to the top cast cover of the box.. plug is in front.

in any event.. while lube may help.. ensure someone has not tightened the backlash adjustment too tight.

also.. does the steering wheel rise and fall as you turn lock to lock?

any rotational play before wheels move as you turn the steering wheel?

The steering wheel does not rise when turned left or right. Do you have to remove the hood to get to the box lube bolt? Where is the backlash adjustment screw? Please understand I am not a mechanic. Thanks!

you may not be a mechanic.. but you now own a piece of equipment that must be maintained. you need to get an owners and service manual.

I told you EXACTLY where to find the plug ( not bolt ) in the top cover of the steering box.

opening the hood and merely looking in you should be able to follow my directions.

teh backlash adjustments are on the back side of the sector shafts.. IE..the stud sticking out the oval covers onthe sides of the box...

lube first before you do anything.. I reccomend NLGI 0 or 00 ep grease..

Hey, Soundguy --

Did you have a bad day at the office, or is hal@nc your brother-in-law?

Deep breaths, deep breaths. . .

good day at the office, no relation, and I breathe fine.

just don't like typing the SAME EXACT DETAILED instructions twice for someone that don't read.

i exactly ID'd where the dern fill plug is. don't take a rocket scientist to follow the tube to the cast top cover.. a BLIND person could run their hand down it.

i've plenty to do vs typing a post 2x...

Soundguy, Over the years I have read your comments on this and another board and have gain a lot of knowledge. I thank you for that. As I stated I have a limited mechanical knowledge and the guy that usally helps me is in the hospital. I am 74 years old, my eyesight is getting bad but I am not BLIND as you stated I must be. I asked for the users of this board to be patient with me and my questions due to my limited knowledge of the 600 series. I have found what I believe is the plug on top of the steering housing after opening the hood to see better. I will remove and grease accordingly. The reason I purchased this tractor was to mow which includes some ditchbanks. The steering is so stiff it scares me to attempt. I thought this forum was to help those who are in need but apparently it is for those who are more knowledgable than I, therefore I will not post any more questions.

your loss if you stop posting.. not ours.

that said.

the comment was not directed at you.. it was directed at reb for taking me to task for a comment not difrected at him.

I encourage you to continue to ask about the steering box.

If it is stiff, and the lube doesn't heplp.. it's easy to correct.. might take a lil sweat and wrench turning.. bt not difficult.

Also.. if you would re-read my message.. I did not say you were blind.. nor did I imply that you were blind. I told another poster ( not you ), that a blind person COULD find the plug.

words mean things.

I use them rather -specifically-.

if you choose not to post back on your stiff steering, again.. that's your choice. I encourage you to continue to solicit maintenance info if needed.
