5000 dies

I have a 1975 5000 with the 8 speed tranny.
This machine gets little use but has always been dependable.
Hooked up the transport disc yesterday and headed up the road to do a little 2 acre field for a guy.
Made about 6 passes and she died.
She turns over good but would not catch.
I pumped the fuel manually and she started " reluctantly".
I brought her home and she ran OK.
Today I changed the fuel filter, and let her run for about a half an hour. Then I took her for a 2 mile ride. She ran fine.
I backed her up to hook up the disc again and she died.
Total run time was proably close to an hour. I am not a diesel guy so I am limited on my knowledge of these animals. But I have 5 other tractors of various makes and am decent at mechanics.

Cheap/easy first... You've changed the filter, which is good, but have you checked the screen on the fuel tap on the bottom of the tank? It's a fine screen, and can get plugged, or nearly plugged, causing the tractor to die when it gets a load on it. I've had that happen to a couple of them.
Also... any smoke? Plenty of black smoke would indicate plenty of fuel, but a lack of air (plugged air cleaner). No smoke would point to a lack of fuel.

do check the screen.. that lil screen has left me stranded in my 7610s before... will she idle but not take load?

most diesels that won't make rpm are starved of fuel..

Oil in pump been changed lately since said pumped fuel manualy.

Clean the strainer in the fuel tank. That will involve removing the tap from the tank and cleaning out whatever crap is in there.
I usually use a shop vac in the filler neck to hold the fuel in, then remove the tap. You be carefull to adjust the shop vac so that it draws JUST ENOUGH air to keep the fuel up but not so much that it collapses the tank... It's really not that hard to do.
Also check over the lines to the pump carefully for leaks. Might be a cracked line that's allowing it to draw air.

Well I pulled the screen out of the bottom of the tank, and it looked like it had a little chocolate pudding all over it !
Flushed the tank
cleaned the screen up and reinstalled.
Fired her up and pulled that disc for 2 hours and she never missed a beat !

Theres' a ball of black gooey mossey algie floating around in the tank.. Did you shine a light into the tank and fish it out. Diesel fuel will grow algie. Run an algicide in the tank and especially in the bulk storage tank to kill off the algie. If you did not get the ball out, it will come back and haunt you.

Never, never use a vacuum to suck anything from a fuel tank that hasn't been rinsed out several times with a non flammable liquid. Pulling those fuel fumes through a vacuum can very easily explode. Motors on vacuums are open not sealed.
