Topic: 860 Flywheel Question

The plan is to take My old 850 put diesel motor and 860 trans in it.I was wondering if the flywheel would have the timing marks marks for a diesel? If not I could set the timing with another flywheel before we install. Motor flywheel and trans are in container where we keep equip. Any body know?

| | The diesel and gas use the same flywheel but the flywheel used before the diesel came out in early 1958 is differant from the flywheel used after the diesel came out. In other words they used 3 differant flywheels depending on what clutch you had prior to Jan 1958.
In Jan 1958 when the diesel came out they changed to 2 totaly differant flywheels depending on what clutch you had. The input shafts of the trans changed at this same time also.

| The diesels are timed at 23* BTC so as long as the flywheel is marked from 0* to 25* you are good. I"m confident that I have looked in the parts manual before and gas and diesel engines use the same flywheel. Of course the diesel engine did not become available until some time in 1958 so Ford may have come out with a new flywheel at that time.

| I think if you will look at the New Holland parts available on the web, I think you will find two different shafts, one before 1958 and one after 1957.And there were no diesels built in 1957.In fact I don't beleive there were any XX1 diesels built before SN 14257
|

| I don't know, for sure, about the timing markes,but I do know that a diesel engine should have a lot heaver(thicker) flywheel than a gas job. Thus the input shafts of the transmission will be of a different lengh
|
