1971 Ford 5000 PTO and Power steering problems.

We have just purchased a Ford 5000. Unfortunately the independent PTO does not operate although the seller said it was working. I have fitted a pressure gauge to pressure point on RH side of rear transmission housing. It reads 40 to 60 psi depending on revs. Book says it should be 130psi or more. Does this mean pump is poor. How much trouble to remove and repair? Can you remove the dual hydraulic pump on 1971 Ford 5000 without removing the lift cover? This tractor also has no power steering operational. It appears that the oil reservoir is leaking oil via the pump seal into the engine oil. You can see the level dropping after filling. Would a leaking shaft seal cause complete pressure loss in the steering. I am looking for a good exploded view of the steering pump and PTO and hydraulic pump that suits this model. The repair manual I have is printed in 1968 and some items appear to be different. Thanks.

pto..
if its low with pto on and off, then I would suspect the pump or a bad leak in the line from the pump to the pto valve on side of tractor. you dont have dual power?? as it also uses this line.

could be bad pump, leaking line, bad rings and ring housing on pto clutch or bad pto clutch Not hard but you will need to do some checking.. I use an portable engine lift to pull the hydraulic cover to get to the clutch if needed.. Makes life easy and simple for one person. Most cases a hydraulic pump will fix it, occasionally I have to go further.

power steering pump. you can get a seal kit to replace the two front seal on the pump, one faces forward and one backwards. but.. this pump is probably bad. A reseal can stop leaks but never fixes low pressure in my expierences.. the kit is pretty inexpensive. I would bet a new ps pump.

Re: PTO problems on Ford 5000

We took the top from the linkage to see what was happening inside. PTO drum was very rusty. PTO could not be turned. I removed the brake and checked the sealing rings. I put air pressure on PTO clutch and it locked up OK. When released the pressure it freed up OK. Looks like the PTO was the problem. The oil line was OK. I put air pressure on PTO valve when pressure pipe is attached and air was escaping from oil bleed hole half way along the bracket. It was escaping with the PTO lever in either position. The brake did not move and hence the PTO was locked from turning. Is there a problem in the control valve. Tomorrow I intend to put oil pressure into port on outside of pump where you check the pressure. This I believe should pressurise the PTO valve and if there is a major leak it should show up. Am I on the right track. Cheers. :?
