304-4 diesel engine barley turns over. Has new battery, new starter and cables. Once you get it started it runs like a champ and has no unusual noises. Has progressively gotten worse over the last 2 years. I have put multiple commercial NAPA 925 amp batteries in parallel to make sure I have enough cranking amps and has not helped at all. Anybody have any ideas? |

| Thanks for the replies. I will try the voltage drop on the cables to see how the connections are but I have hooked the battery directly to the starter solenoid and ground to the bolt on end of starter housing with no luck. If all is good on voltage drop I will probally get another new starter, maybe this one is defective even though it is new. Has any one ever heard of an engine being to tight for the starter to turn it even though it is not a new engine?? |

| YES! If something is causing the hydraulic pump to go up against relief, it will make it very difficult for the engine to crank over. To test for this, start the engine and roll the loader bucket all the way up against the stop - you should hear the engine lug when the cylinder bottoms out. Shut off the engine. Continue to hold the loader control valve in the roll back position while cranking the engine. If the engine cranks the same as "usual", then I'd say something is causing the system to go up against high pressure relief. If the engine cranks even harder than normal, then my theory is not your problem. |

| Thanks for all the tips. I have located the problem. I sould have checked this sooner but had a brain malfunction I guess. I had no current to small solenoid wire and found that a rat had chewed the wire just about 6 inches away from the starter relay in engine compartment. Repaired the wire and it starts with no problem now. Again thanks to all for the help. Mel |

| Cables are notoriously problematic on these machines, especially those with the two battery option. Does "new cables" mean ALL new cables? How about a resistance test of the disconnect switch and a close check of the connector post where the three positive cables meet? |

| I'd probably make a point of checking the ground connections/path to the starter. I'm not entirely sure how that is on the backhoes... but I suspect it goes to the frame somewhere. Check that connection. Also check for a clean connection between starter and bellhousing... Cables... if they're not OEM... make sure they're soldered on both ends. Bolt on cable ends aren't worth a damn.... Beyond that... I'd look at the starter again. Could be brushes, bushings or the contacts in the switch. For what it's worth I've got one that is somewhat weak like that. I still haven't figuered it out... but it's not too bad either....Rod |

| | do you have a battery ground to the starter? bat cables good with no corrosion in them? my 7610s has a 304 in it... and it likes clean cables. if your cables are good. check the wire connections to the starter itself.. past that may be time to pull it to check for bushing wear.. that makes em strain bad and puts the shaft in a side load bind. |
