I'm in the process of rebuilding the manual sterring box on my 601 and was wondering what to put back in the box grease or gear oil or both? |

| | in 1962 ford released a service bulletin '100(1237)' to convert steering boxes from gear lube oil to a 0ep grease. jd cornhead grease is a PU 0ep grease in a tube. snapper and stens and many others make a 00EP grease in a 32oz squeezum bottle.. many yard main and golf course maint stores carry that lube fo rhte lower ends of glof maint and higher dolalr lawn equipment. |

| Danny, More than 20 years ago, I just took out the plug at the top and replaced it with a Grease fitting. Put 1 tube plus of red grease in it. Every year since I put 10 to 20 pumps of red grease in it. I then get a little black junk out the top seal. I have never had my steering box apart and it is tight still. HTH YMMV Keith |

| | Gear Oil You can pack the bearing in the upper column because it never gets oil but the lower part of the box runs in 90w oil. If you are cheap like me and used the old sector gears you may find the 90w still leaks out and you will be forced to use some grade 0 grease. This grease will flow like 90w when warmed by the heat of use but is just a little thicker to where it will not leak out. |
