Hi
I am getting around to re powering my 821 Loader
Backhoe with a ford 172 engine (Had a 62 jeep
engine when I got it).
My motor is ready to install (serial under 10,000).
Had to weld front support bracket to catch
DS front side of motor.
I have many questions
1)I got gas tank and mounting brackets (is it right one??)it has sender hole on top.
2)Can I use mounting holes for gas tank brackets
to attach lifting chain for install?
3)Do I remove 4 large studs on front of motor to
front support?
4) Does the motor get tilted to reach the
Sherman transmission spline?
5) Is there enough clearance on front motor support?

I also have questions on the front mount pulley.

Thanks

Corvetteguy

Check around at tractor salvage yards for some of the parts you need. You may find that getting the correct used arts isn't as expensive as you think.

I am in Starrucca PA.
I have gone to Marshall's and found they
think their scrap is new.
I understand there is a yard west of
Binghamton.

Hi George, you like me were obviously into hot rods at some point, you have entered into a whole new world with tractors. I also approached mine as you did. Believe me they are so easy to get them up and running. Tony is a great guy I have known him for a while and we have met, he is a wealth of knowledge and it's a privelage to get him to respond to a post....He is like the Lee Iacocca of tractors. I would be glad to give you any help or advice also as I have bebuilt and restored a dozen or more of these tractors in every configuration imagineable. I see you are in NE Pa, I am in Oneonta NY, Otsego county. My email is open if I can help.

Hey Tony, how have you been?? It's been a while since we spoke last. I moved out of Orange county and up to Otsego county NY, we like it much better here. I just went and bought a new self propelled snow blower figuring this winter I will spend the money to insure another mild winter..Might make a trip to Cape Cod next summer, I will let you know.

Hello George , Hate to rain on your parade but you need a transmission case that one is junk . The way it has been all cut up it will break as soon as you start using the backhoe hard . Weld what bracket ? on the side of the engine . 1)The fuel tank is wrong it is for a 601 series tractor not an 801 series tractor , you will not be able to install the correct air cleaner . 2)YES 3)NO remove the complete front axle assembly . 4) same as number three . 5) same as number three . Where are you located ? Thanks Tony

WOW Tony
You Are making my day.
I guess I should say that I am fixing this
machine to dig holes on my rocky 50 acres
in NE Poconos. I am trying to keep it from
becoming a money pit in my retirement. I
cannot afford to restore it like my Model
A's from the 70's.

So far you have taught me a lot.

1) The engine can be installed ONLY by
removing the front axle. GOOD TO KNOW

2) I included PICS of front support flange
that I had to weld.WILL IT HOLD UP???

3) Previous owner use a sledge to break out
the bell housing to fit the jeep starter.
I don't see a new one in my future. I only
hope that the motor flange plate will hold
it together. I figure it held for the decades
that it was powered by the jeep. I HOPE...

4) I am going to have to make due with the
wrong fuel tank. The jeep used an OUTBOARD
MOTOR TANK and fuel PUMP. WHAT MODS DO I NEED?

5)I do not at this time have an air cleaner.
CAN YOU SUGGEST ONE TO USE?

I am beginning to think it is going to be a
costly endeavor but leaving the 821 in my shed
never working is probably worse.
George

Hello Geroge , A few years back my brother and I sawed two 68's in half to rebuild an original 400hp 427 w/trips and a four speed , put it back together with a bunch Eckler's parts and it came out great . It is now an NHRA stock class record holding car . I know what you mean about money pits I've had plenty of them too . 1)Yes, 2)If your welding is good it should. 3)Yes but was he digging in Rock ? I would try to find even a S.O.S case and weld in the pieces so all the bolts will be holding together . 4)&5) You can use the 601 tank if you raise it up some with some spacers on the mounts and you may have to dent in the 801 air cleaner for clearence because the 801 tank is made to clear the larger air cleaner . I didn't think you going for a showroom restoration so you can make it work . Thanks Tony
