After much reading of several recent threads having similar issues as my 74 3000 with dying after running for bit, I decided to get after tracing through the system for issues.

Here is one I found....

Seems after getting nice and hot while shredding, and then choking out and dying. Any attempt at an immediate restart would result in this baby smoking. For some strange reason. Also at fault for the choke out was the plug wire ends, which have been fixed. Dizzy checked out fine internally, and fired up beautifully after also getting new air filters and plugs. Had to lift the.front end up to get flat left front tire lifted up and fixed.

So I decided to change the solenoid out same day as tire. Just a small problem.

Solenoid from TSC was cracked apparently, and didnt see it. As tightening the lines up, she cracked nicely completely around and bottom nearly fell off if not for.the magnetic piece inside, which I could now inspect. Cool looking gadget internally.

So, question at the heart of the matter.

Do I take my chances on replacement from TSC? Do I order from another source?

4 post 6v Sellys r harder to find than I thought. All sources require several days to get from warehouse. Not even sure have the.right Napa/O'Reillys #'s. Dealership is unholy priced, as usual.

Do I clean her up and take my chances, see if it is the coil heating up.

Side note on rehooking up lines to Selonoid. Brown wire to battery side had charge light glowing even with no key in it. Stopped and unhooked it before burning up anything. Best guess from attempted trace was back to VR, as it disappears into harness. Wiring diagram shows correct placement for hookup. Was wondering if has to do with field excite from Genny, or similar.

Ideas and advice always appreciated in advance.

Hope everyone has been well. Have missed lurking with everyone.

Mikey

that was something I was having difficulty remembering when I was looking for part. Unfortunately I had left my books at farm in my comfy contemplating chair in barn, instead of in my car where normally is under my seat. 20 miles away armed with only my phone and bunch of frustration after the TSC Solenoid split. Looked on my lunch break at old selly and TSC. 12 volt right there stamped on both.

FACE PALM

Probably not as hard to find. More than likely in stock. Will check tomorrow after work. Hate when I have stupid moments. At least didn't blow any money on that screwup.

From my memory of the many threads I was looking at in the parking lot of nearest Advance, I remember seeing many comments about 6V working on 12V, but some 12V not working on 6V. Might of been why went that direction. Hot and frustrated still no excuse for being dummy.

Thanks for the kinder words on that part.

Thats what I'm thinking is that a 74 is 12 volt not 6. I can't think of anything made in 74 that was 6 volt except for some flashlights.

Also Many tractors that have been converted to 12 volds use the same "6volt" relays without problems. So even if it were a 6 volt and relay that meets the specks....like 3 or 4 post should be able to be made to work.

As far as I nknow, all 3000 tractors left the factory with 12 volt electrical systems.

had tried using Napa TS 541 as cross reference. Nearest was in warehouse in GA. Got the part # from digging through earlier threads on the subject. Also tried S102(O'Reillys)to no avail. Will get one ordered here shortly.

Feeling like I can make do after getting it cleaned up. At least enough to keep grass from being taller than Mama's car, for now.

Appreciate both inputs, Royce and Old.

Well I know for a fact O'Reilly's has them or can get hem in 24 hours since that is where I get them from day in day out. You just need to find a person there that can pick up a book and read. If it was before 9PM I could call them and get the part # but it is not. Now if you e-mail me the tractor model and year as in if it is 3 or 4 cylinder I can get you that info

O'Reilly's carries those solenoids and you can buy them all day long and I know they are better then the TSC china junk.

I have not had good luck with anything electrical from TSC.

If it works without issue, I'd clean it up and use it until I could get a quality replacement.

I'll leave the charge light to someone more familiar with this model.
