The upper steering bearing was long gone on my 640. I removed the steering wheel and underneath it was the felt washer, spring and spring seat but no bearing. I do see a lip about 1 1/2 inches down the steering column. Is that the remains of the original bearing or is it a stop that the new bearing rests against? --thanks, Mike |

| | under the steering wheel, pressed intot he top of the colum is some bushing/bearing ordeal.. more or less centers the wornshaft. at the BASE of the steering column, under the cast top piece is a race int he cast top underside.. adn a thrust bearing sets on the top of the wormshaft on a machined in surface. unde rthe wormshaft is another thrust bearing.. and then race in the bottom of the box. replace all 3 bearings if needed.. races if needed. as long as the ballhut is not excessively worn so that it binds sideways on the worm, and the sector teeth are not worn pointy.. this is a tryly straightforward and easy box to rebuild. soundguy |
